Refund Policy
The Austrian digital vignette is generally non-refundable once the start date has passed. ASFINAG's policy distinguishes between the following scenarios:
| Scenario | Refund Possible? | Action Required |
| Purchase error (wrong plate) before start date | Contact ASFINAG | Submit correction request immediately |
| Trip cancelled before start date | Contact ASFINAG | Request reviewed case-by-case |
| Vignette active, trip cancelled | No | No refund available |
| Duplicate purchase (same plate, same period) | Contact ASFINAG | Provide both transaction references |
| Technical error during purchase | Yes (if not activated) | Contact ASFINAG with evidence |
| Vehicle sold after purchase | No | Vignette cannot be transferred |
Complaints & Appeals Process
If you receive a fine or believe an enforcement action was incorrect, follow these steps:
- Gather evidence: Collect your vignette purchase confirmation, transaction reference, and any relevant travel documents.
- Contact ASFINAG: Submit a written complaint to ASFINAG within 14 days of receiving the fine notice.
- Include in your complaint: Full name, address, licence plate number, date and time of alleged violation, transaction reference, and a clear description of the dispute.
- ASFINAG response time: Typically 10–20 business days for written complaints.
- If unresolved: Escalate to the Austrian Federal Administrative Court (Bundesverwaltungsgericht) within the deadline stated on the fine notice.
- Legal representation: For fines over €500, consider consulting an Austrian traffic law specialist.
